A special collection of Kaaba covers and memorabilia awaits visitors in Istanbul. The most popular piece of the collection, the 350-year-old Kaaba cover, was presented to Istanbulites at the exhibition.

Bekir Kantarcı, who stated that this adventure that started with the first piece he got his hands on turned into a collection, said, “I lived in Saudi Arabia for many years. When I first went there in 1991, the Kaaba cover and the memories of the Kaaba attracted us like all Muslims. This curiosity that started with the first piece I got my hands on in those years has now turned into a beautiful collection. This exhibition that we named ‘Kaaba covers and memories on the way to the Kaaba’ is open to visitors in Bahariye Mevlevi Lodge in Istanbul.”

'THE OLDEST IS A 350-YEAR-OLD RAVZA COVER'

Stating that there are many valuable pieces in the exhibition, from gifts sent from Istanbul to Mecca and Medina to chests belonging to the Surre Procession, which was the ceremony of sending the Kaaba cover every year in the Ottoman Empire, and the ferashet bags placed in these chests, Kantarcı made the following statements;

HE BROUGHT THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE KAABA

Collector Bekir Kantarcı, who said that those who visit the exhibition will feel the atmosphere and emotion in the Kaaba, said, “In addition to the Kaaba covers, there is the story of the move from Istanbul to Mecca. There are examples of Surre Processions, Mahmeli Serif Ceremonies, Mahmer chests, feraşet bags, and gifts sent from here. There are gifts that our pilgrims brought during their 120-year Hajj journeys. There are unique historical objects such as rose water, kohl, old Zamzam boxes and glasses. Especially those who have been to the Kaaba will feel this, and those who have not will see that atmosphere, that emotion, that smell here. In this sense, I hope it will be auspicious.”

OPEN UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR

  • Meryem Güney, Head of the Human and Civilization Movement Art Unit, which hosted the exhibition, said, “As an art unit, we are trying to carry out important work for the revival of our civilization. We provide traditional arts training here. Today, we are hosting a very important collection. We opened this collection on November 8. It will continue until the end of the year, including Mondays. It is a special exhibition of very valuable Kaaba covers and other objects collected by Bekir Kantarcı for 25 years.”
