The private collection of Bekir Kantarcı, founder of Kiswah Culture Art and Jewelry, who embraces the vision of reinterpreting the cultural values of four thousand years of civilization history with Turkish Islamic Arts and jewelry, which he has collected over many years, was presented to the people of Yalova. The 'Kaaba Covers and Sacred Relics on the Way to Kaaba Exhibition', which was opened with the support of Yalova Governor Muammer Erol, was opened to visitors at the Yalova City Museum.
The exhibition, which also covers the Surre Processions, the ceremony of sending the Kaaba cover every year in the Ottoman Empire, also includes many valuable pieces such as gifts sent to Mecca and Medina by the people of Istanbul, Surre Procession chests and ferashet bags placed in these chests.
The history of the Kaaba and its cover
Original souvenirs and antiques such as the zamzam water container and the kok gulab brought with the Surre Regiments on their return from Mecca in the early 1900s, as well as replicas of the sacred relics found in the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad in the Masjid an-Nabawi and brought to Istanbul by Fahrettin Pasha to prevent them from being damaged when the Saudis entered Medina, produced by the Kiswah Culture Art and Jewelry firm, are also on display.
- “We are opening the works and collection products on the subject of Kaaba covers and memories from Kaaba, which we have collected for over 28 years, to the public for the first time in Yalova. For this reason, I am extremely happy. As a Yalova resident, we are happy to open the first exhibition in Yalova. Here, we briefly summarized the history of Kaaba and the history of Kaaba covers. The original Kaaba cover collection of nearly 45 pieces is exhibited here. We tried to explain the history of Kaaba covers with its different features and weaving techniques from time to time to the visitors with very brief historical information.
- It was opened for the first time in Türkiye. We have been working on it for many years. In short, the Kaaba covers in my collection date back 200-250 years. Among them, there are Kaaba covers produced in Hereke, Istanbul. Of course, we obtained these from private collectors, from people who have collected them over time, and most importantly, they include both the past and the last 50 years. It is also difficult to find a Kaaba cover from the last 50 years. There have been serious changes in the last 50 years. Red, green and different types of Kaaba covers were produced. It was very nice to collect them all in one place.”
